EXPERT WORK AND SCIENCE EDUCATION

Luomus is a showcase of research in the natural sciences for the general public and for the support of the societal decision-making. A wide range of science and environmental education efforts and expert duties constitute a core part of the operations of Luomus. We encourage lifelong learning.

Luomus brings the research in the natural sciences forward for the support of the societal decision-making and for the general public. The Natural History Museum and the botanic gardens are among the most popular public attractions in Finland. Luomus is also responsible of expert work related to the protection, monitoring and data management of species, along with being the scientific authority in the CITES-agreement.

SHOWCASING RESEARCH IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES

The core duties of universities are research, research-based teaching and public engagement. Exhibiting the national collections is the third statutory duty of Luomus.

Versatile environmental education work combined with an encouragement for a lifelong learning are essential parts of the activity at Luomus. The public attractions of Luomus – the Natural History Museum, Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden and Kumpula Botanic Garden – are a significant showcase for the latest research in the natural sciences. Through guided tours based on exhibitions, various themed events and popularized publications, Luomus will impart information on natural sciences to the public.
