Luomus is an expert organisation in national and international research. Luomus provides information for the national authorities on issues relating to biodiversity. For example, it generates information for governmental decision-making regarding species and their conservation status in Finland in particular. Luomus also promotes open science. In 2019–2020 Luomus experts participated in 15 working groups regarding different groups of species, in the national working group for monitoring biodiversity, the working group renewing the nature conservation legislation. Luomus experts were also involved in the Helmi Habitats Programme, the national pollinator strategy and in the work of controlling invasive species. Furthermore, Luomus has participated in various working and steering groups regarding biodiversity, climate change and information sharing systems connected to these fields of research.

The staff of Luomus participates actively in the surrounding society. In addition to appearing in the media or consulting various institutions directly, Luomus experts support the work of officials and non-governmental organizations through a variety of working groups.

Articles written for the general public are another important channel for sharing research-based expertise with the rest of society. The number of publications written for the general public in 2014–2020 is shown in Table 15.

Information about all publications by the staff of Luomus can be found in the research portal of University of Helsinki.
