FINANCIAL REPORT

Luomus receives its basic funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture. Part of this basic funding comes from the University of Helsinki’s share of the universities’ financial framework. The remainder is directly allocated for national collection duties. In addition, some of the basic activity expenses are covered by project funding yields and by profits from the public attractions (mainly entrance fees).

The funding allocated for national duties has continually diminished. In 2013–2016 it was annually 2,8 million euro, in 2017–2020 2,4 million euro. In 2021–2024 Luomus will only receive 2,2 million euro annually. Furthermore, the amount of the total funding for the universities was cut in 2015 resulting in budget cuts at the University of Helsinki and at Luomus. Luomus funding was 20 % less in 2016–2019 compared to year 2015. Building layout has constantly been improved to conserve space and increase efficiency. This has allowed for some spaces to be vacated. However, continuously rising rents makes it difficult to maintain the needs of a demanding research infrastructure.

The corona virus pandemic caused Luomus significant financial losses in 2020 due to visitor restrictions and the closure of public attractions. The losses from these were 670 000 euro in 2020 compared to the yield in 2019.

With the help of external funding Luomus has been able to compensate some of the budget cuts. In 2019 the external funding was exceptionally high, and in 2020 Luomus received funding from the Academy of Finland more than ever before. More detailed information on the income, expenses and external funding can be found in Tables 2–4.
