WHAT LUOMUS DOES AND WHAT WE ARE KNOWN FOR

The Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus is the largest biodiversity research infrastructure in Finland. Luomus maintains and accrues the national natural history collections and offers them as research material. Furthermore, Luomus provides science and environmental education and acts as an expert on biodiversity issues. From being a traditional museum, Luomus has become a modern and productive organisation for research and science education.

The collections of Luomus are among the world’s 50 most significant natural history collections. Luomus, an independent institute of the University of Helsinki, has strong international networks and is a pioneer in citizen science. The Natural History Museum and botanic gardens of Luomus are some of Finland’s most popular public attractions.

The core duties of Luomus are based on the Universities Act:

  1. Preservation of the national natural history collections
  2. Research and education relating to the collections
  3. Presentation of the collections to the public as part of science and environmental education as well as the provision of other expert services

Collections, the long-term monitoring of species and the expertise related to it promotes environmental and climate protection and the activity of research, development and innovations.
